While this interpretation is reasonable, even a low DSS was sufficient to recruit CD11b+ cells into the decidua. Thus, it is possible that decidual macrophages serve a similar function during pregnancy in the human. In addition to macrophages, we identified CD11c+ dendritic cells in the decidua. Dendritic cells play a role in cell-mediated immune responses [@pone.0060033-Nilsson1] and are a key player in the induction of tolerance during pregnancy [@pone.0060033-Fieber1]. The abundance of dendritic cells is relatively low in the normal non-pregnant uterus, but increases 5--8 days after ovulation [@pone.0060033-Marra1]. Dendritic cells were, however, not present in the decidua of non-pregnant rats. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the rat decidua is an immunologically active tissue during pregnancy.
In summary, we have shown that the decidua of the rat uterus is a site of production of factors which are important in tissue remodeling, as well as macrophage and dendritic cell recruitment, and immune system activation. The majority of these factors are produced constitutively, but the production of some factors, such as Il-1β, Il-6, and TNF-α, appears to be regulated in a cyclical manner during pregnancy. It is likely that these results apply to the decidua of the human uterus, and will be important to understanding the role of these decidual factors in pregnancy and the associated pathologies of preeclampsia and IUGR.
